Arthur Secunda was born in New Jersey in 1927 and established a career in Paris, France, and on both the East and West coasts and Arizona. He is a painter, collage artist, sculptor, teacher, and graphic artist. He is especially noted for his richly colored collages and skill with printmaking, having received two grants from the Tamarind Lithography Workshop.
In 1946, he served a year in the Air Force as a staff artist and then attended New York University and the Art Students League where his teachers were Harry Sternberg, Reginald Marsh and Julian Levi. He later continued his education in Paris and Rome, studying sculpture with Ossip Zadkine and painting with Andre L’hote. Secunda spent a year in Mexico working at the Esmeralda Escuela de Pintura y Escultura, where he learned the art of wood carving and woodcut printing.
He has served as Curator of Education at the Santa Barbara Art Museum; Art Editor of the Beverly Hills Times, Founding Editor of Artforum Magazine and radio commentator of Arts of All Times in Santa Barbara.
Secunda has been a teacher at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, the Pasadena Art Museum, the University of California, Los Angeles and at Long Beach State College. His first solo show was at the Galerie Lucien Gout in Montpellier in 1950.
