Born in Kyoto, Japan, Sister Francis
Xavier Shimotsuma completed her first
college degree at Mount St. Mary’s in
1963 . Earlier, in 1961, she had re-
turned to Japan to make her prst vows
as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

A scholarship student at Otis Art
Institute, Sister obtained her M.F.A.
in 1977 and did graduate study the
following year.

With more than a dozen juried
shows to her credit. Sister Francis has
exhibited from California to New York
and participated in invitational shows
internationally.

Her teaching experience includes
secondary schools in Japan and Los
Angeles, Mount St. Mary’s, and
College of St. Rose, Albany, where she
was artist-in-residence.
